Three police officers perished and at least 15 others were hurt in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence near the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and a third person who fled after the incident was located soon after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area revealed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings triggered the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official thought the blast had taken place on a floor above the access point and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told local news, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
